A New Chapter at MILE

After serving as the founding Executive Director of MILE from 2023 to 2025, Dr. Maggie Peterson has begun a new chapter in her career. Dr. Peterson’s longstanding passion for teaching is well known within the MILE team. She will continue this work as she returns to her role as Associate Clinical Faculty in UMD’s Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy, and Leadership.

Under her leadership, MILE built a strong foundation that positions the initiative for lasting success. The MILE team is grateful for Dr. Peterson’s leadership, vision, and lasting contributions. Dr. Peterson will stay on in a part time advisory role during the 2025-26 academic year, helping to ensure a smooth transition.

MILE would not exist without the leadership of Dr. Maggie Peterson. We were incredibly fortunate to find in Dr. Peterson the ideal leader to launch and guide MILE, bringing dedication, vision, and heart to work that is often thankless but deeply important.

Laura Groth

While we are sad to see Dr. Peterson go, we are excited to welcome Dr. Laura Groth, who stepped into the role of MILE’s Executive Director in August 2025.

Building on the foundation Dr. Peterson established, Dr. Groth brings more than 15 years of experience in K-12 and higher education research, policy, and project management. She previously served as MILE’s Managing Research Scientist, supporting the organization’s research and technical assistance across Maryland
