Introducing MILE Fellows
Since its founding, MILE has served as an international center of scholarship in language and literacy development and disability, grounded in four foundational Pillars: Education, Policy & Outreach, Professional Development, and Research. These Pillars guided the creation of institutes that brought together scholars, students, practitioners, families, and policymakers to advance equity-focused literacy outcomes.
Today, MILE continues this mission through a Fellowship structure that welcomes faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and community practitioners. Fellows benefit from opportunities to collaborate, mentor, access grant funding, and share their work through MILE events and publications. This structure ensures that MILE’s efforts remain deeply connected to the needs of learners, educators, and communities across Maryland and beyond.
-
We will conduct high-quality, translational research to produce equity-focused and evidence-based literacy practices and policies that build upon cultural, learning and linguistic assets of learners. We will disseminate research findings to scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public, within the state of Maryland and across the nation.
-
We will build and provide technical assistance and deliver professional development on equity-focused and evidence-based literacy practices through research symposia, summer institutes, micro-credentialing, job-embedded coaching and technical assistance to the Maryland State Department of Education and to all Maryland Local Education Agencies (LEAs).
-
We will build upon, publicize, enhance and co-create effective and equitable family-school-community connections for literacy and language (including bi-literacy) development through equity-focused and evidence-based literacy practices to inform literacy policy and implementation in the state of Maryland.
